12 Reasons Why You Must Visit the Canadian Rockies

12 Reasons Why You Must Visit the Canadian Rockies

12 Reasons Why You Must Visit the Canadian Rockies

There’s something simply wonderful about the breathtaking Canadian Rockies that keeps travellers coming back time and time again. Not only is it home to some of the most picturesque mountain scenery in the world, but you can also spot the amazing wildlife and meet some of the world’s friendliest people.

The Canadian Rockies has a real charm and magic to it that leaves travellers full of awe and wonder on each and every visit. As Scenic’s wonderful Tour Director Tina Djuretic says, “Life is not about counting the amount of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away, and that is what the west coast of Canada delivers.”

To help you with your trip, here are the Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours top 12 reasons why you must visit the Canadian Rockies.

Breathtaking landscapes
When we think of the Canadian Rockies we are immediately drawn to its breathtaking landscapes. Experience the beautiful national parks of Banff and Jasper, home to incredible mountains, valleys and deep canyons as well as the iconic Mount Robson, the highest point of the Canadian Rockies, rising 3,954m.

You can even admire the scenery as you drive the stunning Sea to Sky Highway from Whistler to Vancouver with steep mountains one side and the sea on the other. Everywhere you look you will be greeted and charmed by the Canadian landscape that rises above and all around you.

Wildlife
Time your visit right and you can see a diverse array of Canadian wildlife.

From black and brown bears coming out of hibernation during spring; to elk, moose and big horned sheep grazing the land. You can also spot mountain goats, squirrels, chipmunks and whales.

Water everywhere
British Columbia is home to literally thousands of rivers and lakes. Some of the most amazing glacial lakes known for their aqua blue and turquoise colour include the magnificent Lake Louise, Lake Morraine and Peyto Lake in Banff, as well as Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park.

Cruise the glacial waters of Maligne Lake by boat to Spirit Island or hire a canoe and paddle across Lake Louise towards the Victoria Glacier and admire the breathtaking views up close.

Glaciers
Canada is also well known for its glaciers, of which approximately 17,000 are found in Alberta and British Columbia. The Icefields Parkway, along with its jaw dropping scenery and cascading waterfalls, has over 100 ancient glaciers.

Be sure to stop at the Columbia Icefield where you can board an ‘Ice Explorer’ and step foot on the Athabasca Glacier.

Great walks and hiking trails
If you love to explore by foot then Canada is home to many hiking trails to suit all walking abilities. One walk you must do when you’re in Lake Louise is to walk across the frozen lake during winter. For those with more time on their hands, then a hike to the Lake Agnes Tea House is a must during the warmer months. Not only will you be rewarded with stunning views at the top, but you can also enjoy a mug of steaming tea from a choice of 100 different types of loose leaf tea. Be sure to refill with a delicious sandwich and soup or a slice of cake.

In Jasper, you can also walk across the frozen Lake Beauvert at the Jasper Park Lodge, whilst in Whistler, take a leisurely walk along the Lost Lake trail, starting in Whistler village, bringing you to a small pretty lake, with views of Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains along the way.

Stay in magnificent hotels
Canada has no shortage of beautiful properties to stay at and during your luxury tour through the Canadian Rockies you can enjoy a number of Scenic Special Stays at some of the most magnificent hotels.

Experience a 5-star luxury stay at the fairytale Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, known as Canada’s “Castle in the Rockies” and stay in a lake view room at the magnificent Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

For Scenic Tour Director Tina though, the exclusive Fairmont Chateau Whistler is her absolute favourite. “Not only do I love the vibrant energy of the whole town, but the hotel has that ski lodge feeling to it. It’s a huge entrance with big wood beams and lots of gorgeous vases of flowers everywhere.”

An outdoor paradise
If you love the great outdoors, then there are so many activities to get your heart racing. Go canoeing on Lake Louise, enjoy a Float Trip along the Bow River in Banff, or experience the thrill of a helicopter ride over the Three Sisters Peaks.

You can even soar over the valley in Whistler on a zip line, or hit the open road in a Harley Davidson™ sidecar in Jasper National Park.

Of course, for something more leisurely, be sure to ride the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain for breathtaking views over the Banff National Park, Canada’s very first and most visited national park.

Beautiful waterfalls
Besides the rugged mountain landscape, the Canadian Rockies is home to some absolutely beautiful waterfalls including the Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park.

Shannon Falls however is a true highlight and one of the tallest waterfalls in British Columbia measuring 3,335m and located in Whistler along the Sea to Sky Highway.

Icefields Parkway
Drive along the spectacular 230km Icefields Parkway, connecting two of the Rockies most popular destinations – Banff and Jasper.

Rated as one of the top drives in the world by Condé Nast Traveller, you can enjoy majestic mountain views on both sides, spectacular icefields and ancient glaciers, aqua blue lakes and thundering waterfalls, and you may even catch a glimpse of the Canadian wildlife too.

Ride the Rocky Mountaineer in style
No trip to the Canadian Rockies would be complete without riding the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train in GoldLeaf carriage. Board the train at Banff to begin your two day journey to Vancouver on the First Passage to the West itinerary.

Your highlights will include travelling through the legendary Spiral Tunnels and traversing the Continental Divide where you can be inspired by the spectacular mountains and dramatic canyons. And of course, experience unparalleled views from the bi-level glass dome luxury coaches and dine on gourmet à la carte meals, prepared by expert chefs.

Listen to the in-depth commentary from your onboard Hosts as they describe the enthralling history of the local area and provide excellent storytelling throughout.

The people
Scenic guests mention how nice the Canadians are and according to Tina, “Canadians are friendly, polite, courteous and give excellent service”.

It is therefore little wonder that Canada has been named one of the world’s friendliest countries (2018 InterNations survey).

Meet local Canadians throughout your Scenic tour, including a retired member of the Mounties in Lake Louise for an insight into their role in Canadian history and the country today.

The drag mountain air
Breathe deeply. The forests in British Columbia are so peaceful and zen like, with refreshing clean air that smells like pine.

Absorb the peace and tranquillity of the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in Vancouver as it opens early, especially for Scenic guests before the general public.

Manitoba, Canada – See The Northern Lights and Polar Bears All in One Place!

There is never a dull moment in Manitoba.  With an invinite variety of things to do, you’ll run out of time long before you exhaust possibilities.

See the Northern Lights
Known for its spectacle of northern lights that draws travellers from around the world, Manitoba is located directly below the aurora oval – where shooting particles from the sun collide with the Earth’s atmosphere – and Churchill is considered one of the top three spots on the planet for northern lights viewing.

Experience Manitoba Cluture & History
Manitoba is a cultural hotbed, with plenty to offer from the arts to festivals, along with a rich dose of historical landmarks. One of great cultural hubs to visit is The Winnipeg Exchange District. It is a National Historic Site, housing a vibrant restaurant, theatre, museum, and nightlife scene. Winnipeg has also one of the most eye-catching buildings in Canada, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Get a Tast of Local Specialties
From the tradition of fall suppers to innovative popup restaurants on the frozen river, the food scene is a tantalizing mix of the diversity that makes Manitoba so unique. Get a taste of everything from Indigenous fare to Mennonite delicacies, often sourced from the land all around you.

Get Wild on an Arctic Safari
If you’ve ever wanted to travel to the Arctic, spending a summer in Northern Manitoba is a great option. On the coast of Hudson Bay, Manitoba’s north is full of incredible natural wonders and wildlife that you just won’t see anywhere else, and the best (and sometimes only) way to see them is on an Arctic safari.

Speaking of wildlife…..here is a breakdown of some of the wildlife you can meet on an Arctic safari in northern Manitoba

Polar Bears
The jewel of the northern animals, the polar bear is a truly majestic and powerful creature. Seeing a polar bear in the wild is one life experience you will never forget

Beluga Whales
Few things in life can compare to seeing a pod of sparkling white beluga whales as they dive and circle around you.

Caribou
Watching a herd of caribou thunder across the tundra is an unforgettable experience, and one you can enjoy in northern Manitoba.

Arctic Fox
One of the most beautiful animals in the north, the arctic fox has developed a thick white coat that blends with its environment to aid in hunting and in evading its predators like the polar bear.

The best way to experience this beautiful location is to get the help of your travel consultant to find the perfect package for you.

Feel the Calgary Energy!

Feel the Calgary Energy!

Feel the Calgary Energy!

Canada is such a popular destination with Australians, but we don’t always include Calgary in the cities we visit.

Home to the Stampede and so much more, Calgary combines the thrill of the great outdoors with the excitement of a vibrant city!

Experience “The Greatest Outdoor show on Earth”
They don’t call Calgary Cowtown for nothing. The same applies to “the greatest outdoor show on earth,” a nickname well-earned by the Calgary Stampede. This annual citywide phenomenon is a huge part of Calgary’s identity and is not to be missed each July. Expect 10 days of high-adrenaline rodeo events as well as chuckwagon races, pancake breakfasts, concerts, a First Nations Village, and boot-stomping, Westernstyle entertainment. Pack your jeans and join the action.

Explore the outdoors
Set dramatically between prairies and mountain peaks, Calgary is rich with beautiful landscapes and a dynamic array of outdoor experiences making it the perfect playground for active types. In the summer, rafters pack Calgary’s Bow and Elbow rivers, as do anglers and kayakers. Cyclists and joggers can enjoy over 1000 kilometres of bike paths in the city

Relive the former Wild West glory days at Heritage Park
It’s Canada’s largest living history museum. This is a wonderful place to learn about Western Canadian history from the 1860’s to the 1950’s. You’ll find historical buildings, candy shops, bakeries, a small theme park, an active steam train, a sternwheeler boat, classic cars, vintage gas pumps, and so much more

Cheer on the local sports team!
Canadians are mad about their ice sports. Try your hand at curling with a private lesson at the Calgary Curling Club (calgarycurlingclub.com) or catch ice hockey fever at a Flames home game at the Scotiabank Saddledome (the National Hockey League’s regular season runs October to April)

Enjoy the taste of craft beer
If the craft beer movement is growing in some places, it’s fully mature in Alberta. Brew fans have met their match in Calgary, a city filled with passionate, visionary microbrew masters. Make the rounds on your own or join a 15 person big-bike with Urban Pedal Tours to delve into the local brewing and distillery scene, meet the creatives behind the suds, and enjoy some Western hospitality

Adrenalin Rush
Canada Olympic Park on the city outskirts is a legacy venue of the 1988 Winter Olympics. Home to Calgary’s inner-city ski hill, is also home to some incredible thrills. In the summer, you can try the fastest zipline in North America, while in the winter, you can race down an Olympic bobsleigh track at 100 km/h! Where else can you do that?

Indulge in Calgary’s Dynamic Culinary Scene
Eat, engage and explore. Calgary Food Tours takes you to eclectic locations to experience culinary delights and meet local food artisans. Each tour visits a different neighbourhood to sip, sample and savor through.

Play palaeontologist at Dinosaur Provincial Park
There are so many dinosaur fossils in some parts of Alberta there’s a rule against pocketing them from the ground. Literally. Some of the biggest finds on earth have been uncovered at Dinosaur Provincial Park. There’s plenty to explore on your own, but a guided interpretive tour can add another layer of discovery.
