CRUISE DESCRIPTION
10 Night Cruise sailing from Ushuaia roundtrip aboard Fridtjof Nansen. Hotel stay pre-cruise in Buenos Aires.

This is an expedition where the elements rule. The weather, wind and ice conditions will determine our final schedule. Safety is paramount, and the captain decides the sailing itinerary during the voyage. Therefore, this itinerary is just an indication of what you can experience, and why every expedition with Hurtigruten is unique.

Day 1 Buenos Aires – Hotel
Cultural and Cool
Your adventure starts with an overnight stay in Buenos Aires, the bustling capital of Argentina. Spend the evening at your leisure and discover “Paris of South America” on a warm spring/summer day, or extend your stay with an optional pre- and/or post-cruise Land Adventure to explore Wild Patagonia.

Day 2 Buenos Aires/Ushuaia – Flight & Embarkation
Tierra del Fuego
Fly early in the morning to Ushuaia, where MS Fridtjof Nansen awaits. Once onboard, we start our journey with a welcome dinner.

Day 3-4 Drake Passage – At sea
Crossing Drake Passage
Prepare yourself for Antarctica as we cross famed Drake Passage. MS Fridtjof Nansen is designed to make polar exploration a pleasure for all ages and learning levels. There will be lectures on the environment, films about Antarctica in the Science Center, and the ship offers a pool, hot tubs and a wellness center to enrich your journey.

Day 5-9 Antarctica
Welcome to the most remote area on Earth! Come ashore to explore breathtaking Antarctic scenery and encounter penguins. From on deck, there will be ample opportunities to sight whales and seals.

We always work with the elements in Antarctica, and intend to land on the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula.

The places we visit offer opportunities to discreetly observe different types of penguin colonies, seals, and whales, as well as see glaciers and icebergs in every shape and color. We also visit whaling stations and scientific facilities.

Our activities are varied and exciting. One day you might go ashore to see penguins and hear the ominous crackling of glacial ice. The next day, you may feel the wind on your face as we cruise amidst sea ice searching for seals. Another day may entail kayaking or a walk. Our onboard photographer will be on hand to show you the basics of expedition photography to capture these amazing experiences.

Day 10-11 Drake Passage – At sea
Heading back to civilization
After exploring this exhilarating continent, we set our course back to civilization. Spend the day at sea recapping your experiences, having fun in the Science Center or just relaxing on deck, spotting the many sea birds that follow our ship.

Day 12 Ushuaia/Buenos Aires – Disembarkation & Flight
The End of the Adventure
Our Antarctic expedition cruise ends as we reach Ushuaia, and we transfer you to the airport for your flight back to Buenos Aires.

If you are looking for a cruise line who cares as much for the environment as you do, Hurtigruten may be the prefect fit.

They have adopted the UN sustainability Development goals as their guide to providing travellers the greenest and most advanced expedition voyages on Earth.

GREEN TECHNOLOGY
Innovation has been at the heart of Hurtigruten for 125 years. In 2019, they will launch the world’s first hybrid powered expedition cruise ship, MS Roald Amundsen, followed by two more hybrid powered vessels in the coming years.

By 2021, at least six of their ships will be operating on clean biogas, battery power and LNG.

PRESERVING OUR WATERS
Hurtigruten is actively advocating a ban on polluting and toxic heavy fuel oil (HFO) in all Arctic waters and along the entire Norwegian coast.

The protection of vulnerable areas is an important  to thhe company, who support stricter regulations in pristine destinations, including limits on ships and shore visits.

 GIVING BACK
The company is dedicated to contributing to the local communities they visit and to creating a positive impact everywhere they sail.

By trading locally and sourcing services from local suppliers, Hurtigruten contributes to the welfare of communities on its routes.

PROTECTING ARCTIC WILDLIFE
With 125 years of explorer heritage, Hurtigruten is dedicated to preserving and protecting the areas they explore.

Wildlife observation is done at a distance to preserve natural behavior and is performed with the utmost respect for welfare and habitat.

Through science, research and education, Hurtigruten and their guests contribute directly to increasing understanding and preserving animal life.

DELICIOUS FOOD, WITH MEANING
Great food and snack options are available every day of your cruise. Is your preference meat, fish or our popular plant-based dishes?

Whatever your choice, you can rest assured that suppliers are held to high sustainability and animal ethics standards.

The company works to reduce food waste and introduce new work flows to make sure that waste is kept to a minimum. And of course, single-use plastic is a no-go on all Hurtigruten ships.

BANNING SINGLE-USE PLASTIC
Plastic pollution is the biggest single threat to our oceans. Hurtigruten was the first cruise line in the world to ban all unnecessary single-use plastic.

As of July 2018, everything from straws to drinking cups to plastic bags have been removed and replaced with environmentally-friendly alternatives made of biodegradable paper and sustainable materials.

This is just a small sample of some of the initatives being implemented by Hurtigruten so that they lead by example and encourage cooperationg through the travel industry for a greener future.
