The new Qantas service from Queensland to San Francisco, USA is now operational on the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

The 12-hour 40 minute, 11,367km Brisbane to San Francisco (QF59) service marks the first time the River City and the Bay City have been linked by non-stop flights.

Qantas currently operates daily direct flights from Sydney to San Francisco and four times a week from Melbourne to San Francisco. The new Brisbane flight will operate three days a week on a Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

In April, Qantas will start flying from Brisbane to Chicago as it adds another route to its network using the Dreamliner.

Qantas has debuted the first of its upgraded A380 aircraft, with a range of changes across seat classes as well as a redesigned onboard lounge.

The onbaord lounge will now seat up to 10 passengers, while more efficient use of space has turned the upper deck into an all-premium seating (Business and Premium Economy) zone.

Premium Economy seates have seen one of the biggest changes, with an increase in the number of seats from 35 to 60.

The extra Premium Economy seats has been at the expense of the Economy cabin which now has 30 less seats.  However, Economy has received improved inflight entertainment and a new colour palette.

“The A380 is a crucial part of our long-haul fleet and this upgrade program will see customers enjoy everything the aircraft has to offer for years to come,” Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce remarked.

“It also provides an increase in Business and Premium Economy seating to help match the demand we’re seeing on our long-haul routes.

“Working with Airbus, we’ve been able to use the cabin space more efficiently and improve the economics of the aircraft while also providing a better experience in every part of the aircraft.”

Mr Joyce said the next-generation seating would feature across Qantas’ entire long-haul fleet of A380s, A330s and 787s “by the end of this upgrade”.

The refurbishment of the remaining 11 A380s is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

Brisbane to Chicago – fly direct with Qantas from April 2020

Brisbane to Chicago – fly direct with Qantas from April 2020

Just in case you missed it….Qantas has announced that it will commence non-stop flights between Brisbane and Chicago from April 2020.  The service will operate four times a week on a Qantas Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

A joint venture with American Airlines, the new flights are still subject to approval by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), but were tentatively given the green light earlier this month, as reported by Traveltalk.

Expected to go on sale in the coming weeks, the new service will save passengers flying between Australia and Illinois more than six hours of travel time both ways.

It also gives Qantas customers access to more than 30 additional unique one-stop destinations from Australia – and total links to over 200 onward destinations from Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas-Fort Worth.

At around 16 hours and 20 minutes (14,326kms), the new route will be the fourth longest in the world and the national carrier’s second longest.

On top of the Chicago announcement, Qantas confirmed it will be launching flights between Brisbane and San Francisco three times per week, also from April 2020 (pending approval).

Joining Qantas’ daily Brisbane-Los Angeles flights, the two new services will add 170,000 seats between Australia and North America each year.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the new flights would give Qantas and American Airlines customers “unprecedented access”.

“These new services will connect both Australian business travellers and holidaymakers with key centres of commerce, industry and culture in the United States,” Mr Joyce remarked, calling the announcement “fantastic news for Queensland”.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the new routes would generate more than $150 million and 1,700 jobs for the state over the next three years.

“As the world’s largest economy, the United States offers enormous potential for inbound tourism to Queensland,” Ms Palaszczuk stated.

Qantas Frequent Flyer Scheme to be Overhauled

Qantas Frequent Flyer Scheme to be Overhauled

Qantas Frequent Flyer Scheme to be Overhauled

WOW, Qantas has announed the single largest overhaul to its Frequent Flyer scheme since it’s inception 32 years ago!!

An injection of $25 million per annum, with the changes to be rolled out over the next 12 months will see the restructure include the addition of one million extra reward seats annually on Qantas and partner airlines, the slashing of carrier charges by up to 50% on international bookings, and the creation of a new tiered Points Club in late 2019 to better reward those who earn the most points through on-the-ground transactions.

Members will also benefit from a 10% reduction in the number of points needed for international Economy Classic Reward seats.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce also revealed a number of new loyalty agreements with partner carriers Air NZ, China Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines which will allow members to take advantage of changes with its partners.

Unfortunately the news was not all good for members, with the
number of points required to redeem Business class seats on international and domestic flights flagged to “increase slightly”.

Members will need to use 15% more points for Premium cabins on domestic and International Economy Classic Flight Reward seats and up to 9% more points for upgrades.

More Brisbane to US non-stop flights?

More Brisbane to US non-stop flights?

More Brisbane to US non-stop flights?

Thanks to a possible new venture between Qantas and American Airlines, we could soon be flying non-stop from Brisbane to Chicago, Dallas or Seattle!

The U.S. Transportation Department is expected to grant tentative approval to the venture, with stipulations to protect competition and allow for government oversight, Reuters reported.

Despite Australian and New Zealand regulatory bodies approving American Airlines’ and Qantas’ application back in 2016, it was later rejected by the U.S. Transportation Department, opposed by rival carriers Hawaiian Airlines Inc and JetBlue Airways Corp.

The airlines made a second attempt early last year, claiming the venture could generate up to 180,000 new trips between the United States and Australia and New Zealand annually and would “unlock” up to $310 million annually in consumer benefits.

But if the bid were rejected, the airlines warned that Qantas may be forced to reduce the frequency of, downgrade or even cancel its A380 service between Sydney and Dallas/Fort Worth, while American Airlines may have to further reduce services between Los Angeles, Sydney and Auckland.

According to Qantas boss Alan Joyce, new routes arising from the venture could include non-stop flights from Brisbane to Chicago, Dallas or Seattle, Reuters reported.

“We have a number of different, very good routes and plans for a very good expansion into the U.S. when it is approved,” he said.
